A postmortem report carried out by a team of pathologists has established that the late deputy inspector general of Police, Maj Gen Paul Lokech died of natural causes.

Lokech died on Saturday morning at his home in Kitikifumba, Kira division, Wakiso district.

The Uganda Police Force on Sunday released a brief history of Lokech's medical condition that subsequently led to his death.

According to the police spokesperson Fred Enanga, a postmortem examination was carried out on the deceased by a team of four pathologists. This was also witnessed by Brig Gen Dr Stephen Kusasira, the UPDF director medical services, Dr Ben Khiingi, the latest personal doctor and two family representatives.

"The team of pathologists established that the victim got a fracture of the right ankle joint around the end of July, this year. It was a simple fracture, which was being managed at Ruby Medical Center by an orthopedic surgeon. They put a POP cast on the victim's leg and managed him as an outpatient, with regular reviews," Enanga said, adding that the doctors encouraged him to do mild exercises while at home.

The pain in Lokech's right leg however increased in the last three days and it was then that he notified his orthopedic surgeon. He scheduled an appointment on that fateful day (August 21, 2021) at around 8.30 am.

"Indeed at around 7:54 am, the victim called the orthopedic surgeon to reconfirm their appointment. It is unfortunate that shortly after, the victim started facing breathing problems and called his personal doctor, Dr Ben Khiingi who rushed to his home but found him breathing his last," Enanga explained.

He further explained that during the autopsy, the pathologists opened the right lower leg, which got injured and found a very big clot that had formed in one of the big blood vessels. They further opened the chest and found part of the blood clot had been carried into the lungs.

"As a result both vessels in the lungs were blocked, thus leading to the shortage in breath and subsequent death. It was thus concluded as death due to natural causes," Enanga said.
