MPs Ssegirinya, Ssewanyana’s bail ruling for June 29

COURT | SSEGIRINYA | SSEWANYANA 

KAMPALA - The International Crimes Division of the High Court will on June 29, rule on the bail application of MPs Mohammed Ssegirinya (Kawempe North) and Allan Ssewanyana (Makindye West), accused of murder.

The two legislators have so far spent over 240 days on remand at Kitalya Prison in connection to the murder charges related to killing in the greater Masaka region.

Justice Elizabeth Jane Alividza, however, has ordered the prison authorities to produce the medical report of Ssegirinya following claims by the latter that he was tortured.

The judge said she wants to know the ailment suffered by Ssegirinya and the treatment offered to him whether specialised or not.

“I need the information from prisons before I decide on the accused’s bail application,” she said.

Alividza has also directed the prosecution led by state attorney Richard Birivumbuka to disclose evidence they intend to base on during trial to the lawyers of the accused. 

He was assisted by Joseph Kyomuhendo.

The accused are represented by lawyers Ladislaus Kiiza Rwakafuzi, Medard Lubega Segona and Shamim Malende.

The prosecution alleges that the legislators and others still at large during the night of August 2, 2021, at Kisekka B Village in Lwengo district with malice aforethought unlawfully killed Joseph Bwanika.

They are also accused of Killing Francis Kiiza Mugerwa, Sulaiman Kakooza and Taddeo Kiyima. 

They also face charges of attempting to murder Ronald Ssebyooto.
