TRIBUTE | PARLIAMENT | OULANYAH

KAMPALA - Parliament has Thursday held a special sitting commemorating the memory of the late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, who succumbed to cancer last year in Seattle, United States of America.

The sitting, presided over by the Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, accompanied by Speaker Anitah Among, was attended by Members of Parliament, friends and family of the late.

A motion to commemorate his death was presented by Chief whip Hamson Obua.

While paying tribute to the fallen speaker, Legislators were tasked with taking their leadership positions more serious and emulate the principles of time management, research based debate and the spirit of reconciliation that the late stood for.

The late speaker, who served for only nine months, had also been remembered as an extraordinary statesman and a patriot.

Speaker Among noted that the current leadership of the House will continue working in the footsteps and beliefs of her predecessor Oulanyah, the late.

“Jacob Oulanyah is one person who believed in evidence-based legislation. He would ask you, where is that coming from...is it a hearsay? And as the leadership of Parliament we will ensure that we follow the footsteps of the late Jacob Oulanyah who believed in a people-centred parliament,” Among said.

Among assured the late Speaker’s family of Parliament's support and noted that annual memorial prayers are to continue to ensure that the legacy of the deceased is kept.
