The Democratic Party (DP) has given its leaders holding positions in the National Unity Party (NUP) until this August to leave those roles or be fired from the party.

Announcing the ultimatum on Tuesday, DP secretary general Gerald Siranda said his party is restructuring its leadership positions and those found leaning to NUP would not be tolerated.

“There are some people who say they are in DP but also holding other positions as coordinators in a different party. You can’t be in both parties,” he said.

This was during the party’s weekly press conference at the City House headquarters in Kampala.

Siranda added that those who have crossed to NUP have to relinquish their positions in the DP leadership hierarchy.

“We are completely making new restructuring of leadership positions up to August so that next year, we hold a delegates conference to elect a new party leader who will contest in the 2026 general elections,” he said.

Addressing reporters, Siranda was flanked by Kawempe Division DP leader Lazarus Kagimu Kanyike, the president of Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), Ismail Kiirya affiliated to DP and the secretary for persons with disability Edward Waki.

It is understood DP is rolling out the restructuring programme to streamline its leadership, especially in the newly created cities.

The top leadership plans to interact with its leaders in the cities of Jinja, Mbale, Soroti, Lira, Masaka and others to have leaders who represent DP and not those who are double dealing with NUP and DP.
