DEATH

The Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, has died at the age of 68.

Lwanga was found dead in his room Saturday morning, a statement from the Archdiocese said.

"With deep sorrow, I hereby inform you that our beloved Shepherd, the Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, His Grace Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has been called to the house of the Lord. The Archbishop was found dead in his room this [Saturday] morning. We pray that the Almighty and Merciful God may grant him eternal rest," read the statement by Fr. Pius Male Ssentumbwe, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese.

Adding: "We condole with all of you dear People of God, especially the Clergy, religious and Lay faithful of Kampala Archdiocese and the Late Archbishop's family. May the Almighty God strengthen us all in this very difficult time. 

"Further arrangements will be communicated later. Eternal rest grant unto him Oh Lord, and let your perpetual light shine upon him, and may he rest in peace, Amen!"

Lwanga's last public appearance was on Friday during the Way of the Cross organised by the Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC). The event took place at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Namirembe in Kampala.

As the chairperson of UJCC, Lwanga decried the continued disappearance of Ugandans, kidnaps and killings, and urged the security agencies to respect human rights. 

He called for more COVID-19 vaccine safety campaigns by Government to encourage Ugandans to take the jabs. 

Lwanga also urged Christian leaders to lead by good example by sowing seeds of justice and peace. 

“We are giving call to all religious leaders. As religious leaders we are called upon to strengthen the spiritual and moral fibre of our nation so that we all lead obedience to God, shun violence, hatred and all other forms of immorality,” he said.

Lwanga was born on January 19, 1953 at Kyabakadde Village, in Naggalama Parish, Mukono District. 

He was appointed the third Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala  on August 19, 2006, and was installed as the third Archbishop of Kampala on September 30, 2006 at Rubaga Cathedral, succeeding Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala.
