The Uganda National Bureau of Standards has appealed to Parliament to support its proposal, to be allocated sh12b in their budget for the next financial year to recruit an additional 200 staff.

Appearing before the Parliament Trade, Tourism and Industry Committee Wednesday, the UNBS Executive Director, David Livingstone Ebiru, explained to the committee that they have very few staff, and therefore unable to function effectively throughout the country.

Ebiru further noted that with the recruitment of the additional 200 staff they need, they would be able to adequately monitor and enforce quality standards in markets and factory outlets and also man all borders well.

The UNBS officials indicated that Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) with whom they carry out similar compliance operations, have over 3000 staff and yet UNBS has only 440 staff.
