The Rotary International President, Shekhar Mehta, has launched the Maternal and Child Health programme at Kawempe National Referral Hospital.

This programme is an initiative of Rotary Uganda (district 9213). It's a multi-year programme that will be implemented at the hospital, anchoring on empowering adolescents, young women and girls, supporting antenatal care, enhancing capacity and motivation of health workers, advocacy and infrastructural development.

Mehta commended the Rotary community here and donated $1,000 in honour of the CEO of Stanbic for initiating the programme.

"If there is any medical issue you want Rotary to come in, the biggest of what we do is in health care. Please let us know how we can help,” he said.

He added that the programme will create awareness of teenage pregnancies and the problems that come with them.

Mercy Kainebwiso, the chair of the programme, said the programme upon implementation will increase planned pregnancies and respectful ANC attendance, reduce maternal and newborn mortality and severe morbidity.

Meanwhile, the hospital director, Dr Nehemiah Katusiime, said the hospital delivers between 80 to 130 newborns daily.

Earlier, Mehta had toured the Rotary Cancer Centre at Nsambya hospital and pledged support to ensure that it is fully equipped.

Currently, there are plans to build two cancer bunkers at the centre. The planned completion date is 2023.
