City businessman Matthew Kanyamunyu has been freed from Luzira Prison after serving his sentence for killing Kenneth Akena Watmon, a child rights activist, in 2016.

Kanyamunyu was sentenced to five years and one month in jail but he has served three years and five months. The prison authorities considered remission.

Remission of a prison sentence means a reduction of the duration of the prison sentence under certain situations including good behaviour. Prisoners who demonstrate good behaviour, compliance with prison rules, and positive attitudes may be eligible for remission.

He was released on April 12, 2024 from jail.

In November 2020, High Court Judge Steven Mubiru sentenced Kanyamunyu to 5 years and one month in jail on charges of manslaughter after he admitted to killing Akena.

The incident occurred near Malik Car Bond opposite the main gate of the Uganda Manufacturers Association on the Kampala-Jinja Road.

Meanwhile, his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari was set free after the Director of Public Prosecutions withdrew the charge of being an accessory to the murder against her.

Kanyamunyu confessed through a plea bargain to the murder of Kenneth Akena Watmon. He is also said to have confessed to the Acholi paramount Chief David Onen Acana II as the chief witness at Ker kwaro Acholi.
